October 20th:

Well, seems Melissa's out of the band after all. Nikki (the webmaster of the site Clover Reign recieved an email from the band, that was meant to set the record straigh.
I recommend going to Clover Reign for more on this.

Even though Melissa wasn't my favorite when it comes to Hole bassists, I'm sad to see her go, if this really turns out to be true (I've got other sources claiming she's staying... Does anyone know WHAT to think?!). She IS a good bassist, and if you ask me, this would be a great loss for Hole.
I think I ought to mention that they parted on good terms, so there are no hard feelings involved.

September 22rd:

Even more news on this whole Melissa thing (which, by now, is really giving me a headache!):

The Hole Camp's response, from somewhere around the Net:

Melissa Auf Der Maur may have told confidants that she has left Hole, and even told Courtney Love a few weeks ago, but it's a different story at the band's label.

"Right now, as the band's spokesperson, anybody speaking on behalf of Melissa is erroneously doing so. Melissa has not left the group," Dennis Dennehy, Hole's publicist. Interscope/Geffen/A&M, told us just an hour after the story (see story, this page) broke.

However, industry speculation is now turning toward this: With Hole's light schedule for the next few months due to Love's film work, Auf Der Maur feasibly could do her solo work while remaining a member of Hole, so why officially quit? And, there's also talk that all that is needed here is for Auf Der Maur and Love to have a heart-to-heart. Whatever the case, this certainly won't be the end of the story.

From Launch Online:

Hole Bassist Auf Der Maur's Departure Rumors Premature?

(9/22/99, 4 p.m. PDT) - Rumors that Hole bass player Melissa Auf Der Maur will be leaving the band to go solo are untrue, at least for now, according to a spokesperson for the band.

"There's somebody who is speaking on her behalf that is not supposed to be speaking on her behalf," says a spokesperson at Hole's label, Geffen Records. "I spoke to her last night and she confirmed to me that she's still in the band."

"If anybody in Hole wants to do something outside the band they can probably go ahead and do it," he adds. "The band has a fairly loose schedule right now."

The spokesperson added that Auf Der Maur is set to play a show with Hole at the end of October. At press time, the spokesperson didn't know where or exactly when that show would take place.

Rumors are also floating about that Auf Der Maur may take the place of D'Arcy Wretzky, who recently left the Smashing Pumpkins (LAUNCH, 9/10).

When asked if all the rumors of her bassist leaving were making Hole founder Courtney Love a little distraught, the spokesperson said, "Until any official word, there is no reason for anyone to be distraught."

Auf Der Maur was originally brought in to replace Kristen Pfaff, who died of a drug overdose in 1994.

September 22nd:

Just got more news on Melissa's departure:

From Allstar:

Courtney Love got the word about two weeks ago, but a source close to Hole bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur just confirmed Tuesday (Sept. 21) that the bassist has officially quit the band to pursue a solo career and work on other projects.

"This is a time for herself, to pursue a solo career, work on her photography, and she really wants to play," says the source. While she has yet to take any meetings with record labels -- or even managers -- Auf Der Maur is free to sign to another label as she was never signed to Geffen as a member of Hole. "She was just a contract person in the band," says the source, who tells allstar that the Canadian beauty "has written some songs, and has some ideas, but is going to take her time, start working on some demos, and get her head together first."

As for the rumors that she's talking with the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan about replacing the recently-departed bassist D'Arcy Wretzky (allstar, Sept. 9), the source says that nothing is official, but if she did choose to work with the band, she wouldn't be a member.

The offers are surely going to start rolling in, and there is already talk that she might work with her longtime friend Rufus Wainwright (they've been friends since junior high) on his next album, which he has recently begun work on. Again, nothing is set in stone at this point; and Auf Der Maur, who joined Hole in 1994, is apparantly in no rush to get a project out.

As for her photography work, the source says that some interest was sparked from the self portraits she took for Alternative Press a little while back, and she would like to continue to work on her photography.

A statement from Auf Der Maur is expected by week's end.

September 22nd:

After hearing these rumors for a while, it's finally come to a point where I can no longer brush them off as just rumors. According to Rolling Stone Online, Melissa is indeed quitting the band, with the intention of either going solo, or joining Smashing Pumpkins, whose former bassist just quit too.
This is what it says at Rolling Stone Online:

Really Randoms: Hole bassist quits
The hole story.
After five years as Hole's bassist, Melissa Auf Der Maur has quit the band. A representative for the musician says that she has left the group to pursue a solo career, but insiders claim that Auf Der Maur will be replacing D'arcy Wretzky in the Smashing Pumpkins.
"Billy Corgan has been in touch with her about signing on, but she hasn't given him an answer yet," said a source close to the bassist. "She would not be joining as a full member, but rather as a touring bassist."
Auf Der Maur has reportedly been in touch with friends asking their opinion. "It's not that she's been unhappy in Hole," claims an intimate. "But all the inactivity has gotten to her. Courtney is working on a film, and they have no immediate plans to tour. Melissa needed to make music so she left"...

I'm sorry to say it guys, but to top it all, those rumors about Hole touring in November pretty much go "bye-bye" after this one...

September 8th:

I'm hearing there's supposedly a new Hole song, called "Paper & Plastic", on some soundtrack. I have yet to find out if this is true, and if so, what soundtrack.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

September 1st:

Much Music's (the Canadian MTV, so to speak... kind of) Video Music Award show is coming up (airing Sept. 23), and sweet little Miss Auf Der Maur will be presenting (or so I've heard).

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

August 19th:

Seems we'll have a reason to watch the American series "V.I.P.", for once, and that reason is no other than our own dear little miss Samantha Maloney. She's appeared in an episode (that is being edited as we speak, I think), but I have no idea when it'll be aired.
Bummer... I guess we'll have to stand watching Pamela Lee Anderson strut around episode after episode until Sam finally shows up, huh? ;o)

Also, in the new (?) Pretenders video ("Popstar"), there's a girl that's supposed to Courtney Love.
Just an observation from the people on the Violet Hole mailinglist.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

August 29th:

A Saturday Night Live compilation CD is going to be released Sept. 21st, and Hole's 1994 performance of 'Doll Parts' will be featured on it.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

August 13th:

I've heard rumors that due to Hole cancelling so many shows this year, they will make it up to us by going on 'their biggest tour ever'.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

August 3rd:

This is more gossip than news really:

The new Nine Inch Nails song "Starfuckers Inc." is said to be either about Courtney Love, or Marilyn Manson.
Here are the lyrics:

My god sits in the back of the limousine
My god comes in a wrapper of cellophane
My god pouts on the cover of the magazine
My god is a shallow little bitch trying to make a scene
I have arrived and this time you should believe the hype
I listened to everyone now I know that everyone was right
I'll be there for you as long as it works for me
I play a game it's called insincerity
Starfuckers, Starfuckers, Starfuckers, Incorporated
I am every fucking thing and just a little more
I sold my soul but don't you dare call me a whore
And when I suck you off not a drop will go to waste
It's really not so bad you know
Once you get past the taste (Asskisser)
Starfuckers, Starfuckers, Starfuckers, Incorporated
All our pain
How did you think we'd ever get by without you?
You're so vain, I bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?
Now I belong, I'm one of the chosen ones
Now I belong, I'm one of the beautiful ones

There are also rumors about Geffen dropping Hole, due to all the cancelled shows this tour.

On an entirely different note, Courtney Love's co-star in the movie 'Beat' will be the one and only Kiefer Sutherland, who will be playing William S. Burroughs himself.

Marilyn Manson are supposed to release yet another home video, this time from behind the scenes of the 'Mechanical Animals' tour. The video will be called "God Is In The TV", and I wouldn't be surprised if get to see bits and pieces of Hole, since they did tour together.

Last but not least, an article about how Courtney supposedly punched two girls at the "Q101 Jamboree", Illinois:
(Personally I find it rather ridiculous...)

Courtney Love Assaults Two Concertgoers Who Call Her "Murderer"

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

July 30th:

I'm hearing hole's next single will be Boys On The Radio, and that the band will be shooting a video for it before Courtney starts shooting her new movie 'Beat'.

It also seems the 'Malibu' video has been nominated for 'Best Cinematography In A Video' for MTV Video Music Awards 1999.

Hole will be featured on HBO's concert program "Reverb" with a show that was filmed at the Electric Factory, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 15th this year.
The concert is set to air sometime next fall when the new season of "Reverb" starts. I'm told it'll only be shown on HBO 2, and not regular HBO.

July 1st:

(From NME):

FAN'S DEATH SHOCKS HOLE

Courtney Love is said to be "very distressed" by the death of a 19-year-old female fan at a Hole concert in Sweden.
The tragedy happened during Hole's set at the Hultsfred Festival on June 17.
Although full details have yet to be confirmed, it is believed she was crushed at the front of the stage.
Hole have not issued a statement over the death, but a UK spokesman for the band confirmed the incident had deeply shocked Love and her bandmates.
The dead woman had not been identified at the time of going to press.
The incident happened just before Hole teamed up once more with Marilyn Manson at Italy's Heineken Festival.

Eric and Melissa have teamed up with Silver Sun, Clem Burke (Blondie) and Kathy Valetine (The Go-Go's) to cover Gary Glitter's "Rock And Roll Part II". The track will appear on a tribute album to glam rock, and is scheduled to be out in November, on US indie Robinson Records.

June 23rd:

Seems Melissa too has now become a model, a Calvin Klein model, along with Shirley Manson. Miss Auf Der Maur can soon be seen on Calvin Klein billboards and magazine ads.

(source unknown)

Courtney Love to Play William Burroughs's Wife

Courtney Love has signed on to portray literary legend William S. Burroughs's late wife, Joan, in the upcoming flick Beat, which begins production next month. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Love will star opposite hot young actor Norman Reedus, who portrays Lucien Carr, an acquaintance of Burroughs and fellow Beat writers Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Love can be seen later this year in Man on the Moon, director Milos Foreman's biopic of maverick comic Andy Kaufman.

June 18th:

Tragic news: During the show in Sweden last night, at the Hultsfred Festival, a girl died in the mosh pit. Wether or not this is the first time someone dies in a Hole mosh pit, I don't know, but it's the first case I've heard of.
What's even more sad is that I can say that I knew this girl, and that she was one of the sweetest people I've ever met.
R.I.P., wherever you are.

June 14th:

This email was sent to me last night, and I thought I should post it as it is:

Because the Edgefest was cancelled in Montreal, Melissa and Hole's fans are dissapointed. The bassist promised to Montrealers to do something about it : Hole are contacting Musique Plus ( a kind of MTV in French) in order to fix a date for a special unplugged show ..........That means that Hole fans will see the members of the band much closer than at the Edgefest!!!!!!!!!!! ( and 95% more chances to get Courtney's autograph!!!!!!) Since I live in Montreal, it will be a great pleasure for me to answer any questions about this special show! It's about time Hole comes in Montreal: Melissa's town...

Kid Rock Asks Courtney Love To Appear In New Video

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

June 7th:

Seems like Universial Music in Australia also are releasing a limited edition of Celebrity Skin, with two CD's, just like the one I mention under June 4th. The second CD, however, is just the same as the Australian Awful single.

And speaking of Awful... I'm hearing that the video is showing now, and that is mainly consists of live clips.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

June 4th:

I'm hearing rumours that there will be a limited edition of Celebrity Skin released in France this month. It'll be a double cd with 6 rare tracks.
The rumor has not yet been confirmed though.
