Here is a fragment of an interview, where Courtney, Eric, Patty and Melissa talk about the drug Ecstasy:

Interviewer: Have you ever taken Ecstasy?
Eric: Oh yeah.
Melissa: Yeah.
Patty: Yeah, in London.
Courtney: I remember when (the Ecstasy craze) first started and I was over in London. People were making it in secret labs, and just journalists and people in Frankie Goes to Hollywood did it, and I went with my friend to this loft that was all white fur with beanbag chairs, and everyone there was making out on it. Except me. I can say I've never taken Ecstasy.

  • When Courtney was a child, she had dreams about poisoned milk, which later reappeared in her lyrics.
  • Several years ago Courtney, and later Kurt too, lived at Eric Erlandson's house.
  • Courtney is said to have written the following line in Smashing Pumpkins' song "Disarm": "The killer in me is the killer in you"
  • Courtney and Kurt sometimes checked into hotels under the names Mr and Mrs Simon Richie (which was Sid Vicious' real name).
  • When Courtney and Kurt got married, Courtney wore a dress that had belonged to Frances Farmer (an actress from the 1930's).
  • In the Doll Parts video, Eric supposedly uses one of Kurt's guitars.
  • Both the song "Celebrity Skin" and "Hit So Hard" were played in episodes of 'Dawson's Creek', "Heaven Tonight" has been used in a commercial for 'Felicity', "Boys On the Radio" was played on the show 'Roswell', "Northern Star" on 'Party Of Five', "Use Once & Destroy" on 'One Life To Live' and "Malibu" was played in one of the first episodes of 'Popular'.
  • Courtney and/or Hole has been mentioned in the TV series 'Mad About You', 'Catwalk', 'Will & Grace' and in movies such as 'Vanilla Sky', 'Beavis And Butthead Do America' and 'Cruel Intentions 2'. Courtney has also appeared in two episodes of 'The Simpsons', the first time being pictured on a box of Wheaties, and the second in the Halloween Special episode where the earth is coming to an end, and all the "good" people (Marge, Lisa etc etc) are sent to another planet, and all the "bad" people (Bart, Homer, Courtney etc etc) are sent straight to the sun. She and Kurt were also portrayed in an episode of 'Family Guy'.
  • According to Courtney, in a 1991 interview, she lost her viginity in a council house, listening to Joy Division's "Isolation". Here's the exact quote: "I want this printed. This has never been set down in ink before. I lost my virginity in a council house in Liverpool, listening to "Isolation" by Joy Division, to a guy called Michael Mooney, who hung around with Teardrop Explodes. After we'd done it I went across the road for cigarettes and I had all this blood and fluids running down my legs. Luuurgh, real graphic. I want you to print that."
  • Courtney's said that when she was 16, she used to write lyrics for the band Faith No More, and that they never even cared to look at them.
  • Courtney's first husband, James Moreland, produced all the songs on 'The First Session'.

  • 'Miss World' has been sung (not by Hole) at the beginning of an episode of the TV series 'Profiler'
  • There is a dedication to Courtney in the book "The Dead, celestial arts" (1980) (about The Grateful Dead), written by her father.

A Song About Melissa

In concert in 1999, Courtney made up a song about Melissa. Here are the words:

I'm gonna tell you all about Melissa
With her sheen all the boys will wanna kiss her
They don't get anywhere cuz she saves her power
I'm gonna tell you bout the girl of the hour
I'm gonna tell you all about Melissa
Her red hair all the boys die to kiss her
And will they get her, they'll never ever know
Cuz she'll never ever ever lose her power let it go

The Muffs: Blonder To Blonder:

The Muffs second album "Blonder to Blonder" is rumored to be named so because Courtney Love said "Kim Shattuck keeps dyeing her hair blonder to blonder to keep up with me."

* Thanks to Kevin.

The Muffs: Hamburger:

On The Muffs cd "Hamburger", track 10 is entitled "Love". It is just an answering machine message left for Kim Shattuck of the Muffs. The entire message is:

"Hi this is Courtney... This isn't like a bad thing, it's not like I don't like you or something, 'cause I do. I think your band is cool... but I swear to God, I'm only gonna tell you this one fucking time and I want a retraction. I just read um... 'Says'. I did not steal the dress from Babes In Toyland, I loaned my dress to Kat and she went to England wearing it to every fucking show. I stole that dress from Christina Amphlet way back in 1981... So, I mean this really needs to be cleared up, I swear to God I did not steal it from them. Fuck, what do you think me and that band are having a huge fight about? She stole my dress, so I had to switch to the white dress 'cause she pretty much pissed all over the first dress. So that's why I got annoyed about the white dress 'cause it took me about a year to figure out about the white dress. Yeah, so I just wanna clear that up, k?

It's not a bad thing. It's not like I'm mad. I just wanna make sure that um... (coughes or something... some kinda scratchy noise) it's clear. Kat stole the dress. Alright, check you later. Good luck with everything. Alright...bye."

* Thanks to Kevin.

'Awful'

Courtney's said that the line 'He's drunk, he tastes like candy" in 'Awful' is about Gavin Rossdale in Bush, and that she first wanted it to be 'He's so icky', but Billy Corgan made her change it, and Gavin also had a say in it somehow. This is supported by Bush's official book "27th Letter", where it's written that the last couple of lines in the song "Insect Kin" ("It's all the pain in the way she talks, it's all the pain in the way she walks, it's all the pain in her wave goodbye, it's all the pain in the way she smiles, all the pain in her fatal charm, all the pain is in her arms") are about Courtney.

Songs About Hole Members:

There are numerous songs that are about about, or that mention Courtney, and/or the other members of Hole, made by other people. Below are just a couple of them.
The lyrics for most of the will be found in the Lyrics section.

  • Nerf Herder - Courtney
  • NOFX - Kill Rock Stars
  • New Radical - You Get What You Give
  • Diesel Boy - True Drew
  • Bob Rivers - Courtney Love Stinks

Gavin Rossdale of Bush has been quoted saying the following, about the Bush song "Insect Kin":
"All the pain in the way she walks/All the pain in her wave goodbye’
That stuff is totally about Courtney; I don’t mind saying that at all. It comes from when I was first friendly with her. I met her in Washington, where we both played a big radio show, and then when we went to Seattle to record a song for a film, we got apartments there and stayed for a few weeks. I rang up someone, a mutual friend, to get her number..... What did I learn from her? That it’s really good to soak up knowledge; that it’s good to strive to be erudite and articulate and culturally involved. It’s just like kindred spirits; I’ve always felt that with her. Which is what this song originially was called, ‘Insect Kindred’. People of the same silk.”
