In some Hole songs you'll hear sounds that really don't fit in, or that aren't supposed to be there, or that simply are really hard to hear. Here you'll find a list of the ones I've managed to find, both myself and thanks to other people. Some are kind of silly, but hey, I'm doing this because it's fun!

Old Age (on 'beautiful son' single)

At the end you can hear Courtney say "Is that too fast, Eric? Do you want me to do it..."

Violet

Right before the bridge, at 2:44, there's a sort of chain-like, jingling sound.

Miss World

Right after Courtney sings "Watch me break and watch me burn", she inhales, and it sounds like she has phlem in her throat, and needs to clear it.

Also, right at the end, during the very few last seconds, there's a faint echo of Courtney singing "I am the girl you know, so sick..." in the background, although the only part you can really hear is "... you know, so sick..."

A while back someone emailed me, saying that if you turn the volume up right at the end, you can hear a mean say "Yo, what's up". I myself haven't been able to find this, no matter how much I amplify the sound, and the person who emailed me claims to not be able to hear the "you know so sick" echo on her cd. If anyone has more info on this, please feel free to email me.

Plump

At 1:51, there's a strange sound that I really can't describe. It reminds me of a submarine. *grin*

Asking For It

In the intro, right after the first string pick, before the first chord, there's another sound I can't really describe. Sounds like someone handeling their instrument (that's the best description I can think of).

Another thing is that one can hear Kurt's back up vocals. I don't think they start until the first "If you live through this..." part. If you listen really hard, you'll be able to hear him, especially when Courtney sings "I will die for you".

Last and probably least interesting, there's a sound of guitar strings being stummed during the very last few seconds of the track.

Softer, Softest

This is another song in which Kurt can be heard on backup vocals. It's alot more difficult to hear than in "Asking For It", but it's most easily heard when Courtney's screaming "Your milk turn to cry".

Also, during the last few seconds, you can hear a string being picked (or released) and the sound of the hi-hat closing.

She Walks On Me

There's a jingling, scratchy sound at the very start, during opening riff. Someone emailed me with the theory that it's "the sound of guitar strings that haven't been cut after they were put on hitting the microphone."

At 2:23, there's a whispering sound, and a computerized-like voice at 2:30, saying 'Please don't cry', and I think there's something else too, because a moment later, there's an inhale. According to someone I talked to about this, it's not really computerized. She said that it was just a weird microphone effect, like "she's [Courtney] either using a vocoder or distortion".

Right before the 'Please don't cry' thing, there's another sound which I can only describe as whispers, and a moan. It's really hard to hear, even in this enhanced sound clip, but if you listen really carefully, you might be able to hear it.

After the very last "She walks", when Courtney's voice has faded out, there's another voice that keeps singing "walks" or just "aaaahh" for a moment longer. It sounds a bit distorted, and it doesn't really sound like Courtney, but I could be wrong. On the other hand, Courtney herself has said that Kurt's background vocals are all over the album, so who knows...

Last but not least, during the very last seconds, the jingling, scratchy sound can be heard again.

Gutless

In the bridge/solo part, the words Courtney's saying are: "I wanna drink your honey blood. I wanna drink your honey blood".

Also, during the last second of the track, the intro for the original Rock Star (aka "So You Wanna Be A Rock Star") can be heard. The very first chord is played, stops, and is then played again.

Rock Star

There are three things in this one. First of all, the Dirty Panties remix version of the song can be heard playing "under" the real version.

Second, and this is the most obvious one, after the music stops the first time, Courtney's saying "No, we're not done" which is followed by the noisy end.

And third, at the very last couple of seconds of the song, you can hear someone (which I believe to be Patty) saying something. There have been several guesses and opinions on what's being said, but to me it sounds like "Ok, she's walking to the car". It doesn't make sense, and I'm probably wrong, but that's what I hear. Suggestions are more than welcome!

Miss World demo

Someone said you can hear a telephone ring in the background, for about 30 seconds. Personally, I don't hear it.

Malibu

This is the song I've witnessed the most discussions about. In the very last couple of seconds, there's a strange noise. I've heard many different takes on this one. Some say it's Melissa singing something, some say it's Melissa chanting, some say it's Courtney singing something, some say it's Courtney chanting, some say it sounds like an opera singer, some say it's a guitar, some say it's an African instrument, some say it's an Indian instrument, some say it's a citar and some say it's simply a man talking. The latest theory is that it's an old recording of Kristen, so that her memorial fund would get some of the royalties. Take your pick, right after you take a listen:

Reasons To Be Beautiful

There are two things at the end of this song. One is the end of the song itself; Courtney saying "Is... no... more". Some people say the voice is too deep to be Courtney, but it's not. It truely is Courtney.

Now, the second thing can be heared during the very last seconds of the track. With the volume cranked really high, you'll be able to hear a male voice talking. Personally, I have no opinion on who it is and/or what he's saying, but some people believe it's Eric, and some believe it's a studio technician or something similar.

Dying

At the very beginning of this song, you can hear Courtney whisper something. Alot of people don't hear what, but my take on this is "You've seen a cripple dance? Bring/Pay me/Be your money, baby, now's your chance. Your lies like cyanide."
For a sound clip, click here

NOTE: Please don't email me about this, telling me she's saying "Eyes like cyanide". Dozens of people have already done this, and I still strongly believe it's "Lies like cyanide", especially judging from the sound clip above, and until I hear anything else from Courtney herself, I will not change my mind.

Another thing in this song is that at the VERY VERY end, (the last two seconds before the track ends) one can hear some muted strings being picked.

Northern Star

Right after Courtney sings "the fire and the ashes of his grace" there's a sound like when someone changes positions on a chair.

During the line "I'd cherish all my misery alone" there's a sound that reminds me of the alarm on a wrist watch right when Courtney's singing "all my". For a sound clip, click here

Heaven Tonight

The very first time Courtney sings the word 'girl' ('here comes a storm in the form of a girl') it sounds like she has phlem in her throat, like she needs to clear it.

Playing Your Song

If you listen hard to this song, you can hear a darker voice join in during the first chorus, stopping for the 2nd verse, and then continuing throughout the song. Alot of people have said they think it's Billy Corgan's voice, but it's really Courtney's voice, only it's tuned down a step.

In the bridge (Their innocence tastes like candy, yeah... etc), one can also hear some feedback from a mic, or something similar, which you'll also be able to hear in the sound clip.
