SUNDAY, JULY 11TH, 1999, EDGEFEST, COMMONWEALTH STADIUM, EDMONTON, CANADA
By Fiona

I went to the Edgefest in Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium on July 11, 1999. Hole were the last band to perform and their set started at 9 o'clock and lasted for an hour.. The first thing I heard was the intro from Credit in the Straight World and then suddenly the band was onstage and immediately it started raining and rained for half of the show. I don't remember the exact setlist but I do remember that Violet was the first song, then came Awful and Pretty on the Inside and they ended with Celebrity Skin. In between these songs were played: Malibu, Use Once & Destroy, Dying, Northern Star, Boys on The Radio, Doll Parts and Miss World (Melissa also sang parts of that Bryan Adams song and Come On Feel The Noise).Courtney wore a black dress that she took off later and she had a black tube top or something like that (I was quite far away) and black hot pants on. Melissa wore a greenish-blue tube top and black pants and a viking hat with horns that she took off at the very beginning. Eric wore black and I couldn't see what Sam was wearing. The highlights of the show were:

-Courtney sang a few lines of this really weird gospel song and people at the front were still moshing so she said "This is 1999, not 1991 so why are you moshing to a gospel song?"
-I was sitting in the stands (far away) for Violet and half of Awful but I could barely see Courtney from there and besides, there were Courtney haters there saying stuff like "Get off the stage, you slut" etc.. and I was not in the mood to get into a fight so I went down to the floor area and was there for the rest of the show.
-someone held up a "Sam Rocks" sign and Courtney took it and said they get one at every show. Then she said that not many bands had awesome girl drummers and "we're the only rock band that ovulates"
-when she was introducing Use Once & Destroy, Courtney said "This is a song about FUCKING!!!" (yes, it was that loud & intense!)
-Courtney was letting a lot of people come up on stage, unfortunately, they were all from the mosh pit and I was very far back. She kissed a guy on the lips and said "No, there's no chemistry there"
-during Dying, a huge explosion of glitter was released on the crowd..it mostly settled on the Edgefest banners around the stage.
-Courtney did not take off her top but she flashed us very briefly during Malibu and I didn't catch it...then she asked the girls in the crowd to take off their tops..a few actually did.
-she tried to sing the Canadian anthem but she didn't know the words and the crowd wasn't in the mood to sing it with her so she didn't finish. She swore A LOT.
-when she was singing Northern Star, she left the stage and started climbing up on those support things at each side of stage (those who went to Edgefest know what I mean) and when she was at my side of stage I started waving my hands in the air and since I was practically the only person in my section who was doing that, she kinda pointed to my section while singing Northern Star...I don't know if she pointed at me but that was good enough..
-I actually saw someone in a Nine Inch Nails T-shirt walking by and that cracked me up because I thought Courtney was going to bring them up and humiliate them but she didn't...there was no one in Kurt T-shirts there though.
-she told us that she really liked the Edgefest tour and the artists on it and that it was better than all the radio festivals in the US she'd done.
-during the last song (Celebrity Skin) I really went crazy cuz it's my favorite song..I started jumping and screaming the lyrics with Courtney..the people around me looked at me like I was crazy but I didn't care..that was one of 2 most memorable moments of that show..the other was when I was all soaking wet standing in the rain, singing Malibu with her..that was just such a classic Hole fan moment.
-when Hole left the stage, the Malibu dance remix was played. And that was the most kick-ass concert of my 15-yr-old life.
