NOVEMBER, 1991, INDEPENDENTS' DAY FESTIVAL, BERLIN, GERMANY

HOLE were punishingly brilliant, Big Black's sisters seperated at birth. The guy crouched over his guitar looked like a muso consumptive, one of those brilliant nerds who sleeps with his instrument. The bassist looks so pop-eyed weird she's probably mute. But Courtney Love, in ickle-girl night dress and flashing psychotic daggers at us with those eyes, is the star. When she caterwauls "GET OUT OF MY HOUSE" on "Teenage Whore" you've no choice but to leave the building, forced out by the splenetic avalanche of guitar. Too good to endure.     I'm not sure that the pfenning drops with the crowd but me, I leave the joint scarred. I can't take this anymore. Brilliant.
