COURTNEY LOVE BECOMES MOVIE PRODUCER

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Rock celebrity Courtney Love is turning her attention to movie production, setting up a company whose first picture will be a teen romantic comedy.

Love, the feisty frontwoman for rock band Hole, earned critical plaudits in 1996 for her first major film role, as the self-destructive partner of Larry Flynt (Woody Harrelson) in Milos Forman's "The People vs. Larry Flynt." She has a role in Forman's Andy Kaufman movie "Man on the Moon," starring Jim Carrey, which is scheduled to open Nov. 5.

Love established Epitome Prods. with music manager Janet Billig, and is likely to appear in some of the projects it develops. She is not expected to appear in its debut effort, "I Think We're Alone Now", however.

The romantic comedy, which does not have a director attached, is the story of two mismatched teenagers who are crazy about each other but are kept apart by increasingly bizarre circumstances. It will be financed and distributed by Miramax's Dimension Films genre banner. Love and Billig will produce.

Love, who kicks off a U.S. rock tour next month, said: "The goal of Epitome is to make original, high-quality films. In all our projects we seek to find partners that share a common goal. Dimension's success has shown its ability to make films that speak to today's teen audience."

Love, the widow of Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain, got her start in the movies playing bit parts in the Alex Cox-directed pictures "Sid and Nancy" and "Straight to Hell". Her other acting credits include "200 Cigarettes", "Basquiat" and "Feeling Minnesota".

Billig, a former senior VP of Atlantic Records, manages acts such as Lisa Loeb and Bijou Phillips.
